One major area of research in the field of Electronics and Communication is Digital Signal Processing. It can be further divided into many sub-areas such as Image processing and Audio processing. In Audio processing field the major research area is Speech signal processing. There are number of research labs and groups of different universities working in this field.
Mainly if we apply
for an internship abroad we have much greater oppotunities especially in European counties viz. Italy, France, Germany and Spain. Funds are also easily available in these countries.

There is a Association called ISCA (International Speech Communication Association) which has members from various Speech research labs. Labs are listed here country wise.
Students should mainly look on the European research labs to apply for Internships. German Internships are usually funded by organisations such as Max Plank Institute or DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). A number of students from various colleges in India such as IIT's, IIIT's, NIT's go to Germany for having Summer Internships every year.
